A General's Discouragement

YEBDOD WAS ONE OF THE few casualties of the battle. A wounded Gibbor had kicked him in the chest, breaking ribs with a massive foot. Soldiers of Yissakhar brought Yebdod back into Stone Circle on a litter, and a small crowd gathered around him. A girl named Shoshanah, Aksah, and his mother tended to him. Though he was in considerable pain, he wasn't coughing up blood, which was a good sign.

With the smoke of Bet-Yariq pluming into the sky beyond Stone Circle as dusk darkened to night, Yebdod's comrades brought him to the cookfire, laid him down gently and tried to make him comfortable.

"Does it hurt?" Zuar asked, sincerely.

"No, Zuar, it feels wonderful," Yebdod replied. "You should go out and have this done as soon as you can."

The others laughed. "Well, he's still got a sense of humor," Othniel observed.

"I wonder if that Gibbor had six toes on each foot," Achan mused, stroking his beard in an exaggerated pose of deep thought. "Take your shirt off Yebdod, so we can look at the imprint."

Everyone laughed, including Yebdod, who grimaced from the pain of laughing.

"I told you not to make him laugh," Abidan said. "With broken ribs, laughing is no better than riding a galloping camel."

"Well, I wish you'd told me that earlier," Achan said, then cupped his hands around his mouth. "Cancel the camel race!"

They laughed some more, then fell silent when Y'hoshua strolled up to their fire, with Kalev, Paltiel and Elizaphan in tow. Everyone but Yebdod stood and saluted.

Y'hoshua scanned the group, gaze coming to rest on Yebdod. "This must be the injured man. How are you doing, soldier?"

"It only hurts when I breathe, Sir," Yebdod replied.

Everyone chuckled at the quip, including Y'hoshua.

"By all means, then," Kalev said, deadpan, "let's put a stop to that right now!"

They laughed again, a bit louder. Y'hoshua squatted beside Yebdod and squeezed his shoulder. "I heard there's no blood in your spit. That's good. Just stay as still as possible until you start to heal. Move around too much and something important might get cut by the broken edges."

"I'm trying not to move, Sir," Yebdod said, serious now.

Y'hoshua rose and addressed Yebdod's friends. "Men, I hope you remember today for the rest of your lives, and tell your children about what El Elyon did here in our sight. No enemy can withstand him. There is no other god like him."

Othniel nodded, and they all verbalized their agreement.

Y'hoshua gave them all a salute, then located Abidan, pulling him aside. "I need a word with you, soldier."

"Of course, Sir," Abidan said, following Y'hoshua to a spot well away from the cookfire.

"I have a mission I'd like you to participate in," the old field marshal told him. "You'll have to pack light, move fast, and do some climbing."

Abidan nodded. "I'm at your service, Sir.'

"Meet me at the command post once you're ready," Y'hoshua said.

Abidan saluted and marched for his tent.

Y'hoshua turned to Kalev and Elizaphan. "I need both of you to give me a man, too.
